UPDATE: The Skylease 747 has started to be dismantled at Halifax International. Teams have begun chopping the Boeing jet up into smaller pieces.

The local weather isn't helping matters as the ground is like slurry making it hard for teams to use equipment. Engineering teams have also repaired the broken navigation equipment at the end of the runway.

Sky Lease Flight GG4854 has suffered major damage after failing to stop on the runway. The Boeing 747-400F departed Chicago-O Hare International airport at 01:02am local time, and later arrived at Halifax International Airport. The aircraft was making a scheduled landing to pick up fresh lobster to take to China, However the jet never got to the apron.

After touchdown the aircraft continued past the end of the runway, ending up 200 metres after the end of the runway and next to the perimeter fence, which separates the Canadian airport from a public road (Old Guysborough Road).

It's believed the aircraft also hit an antenna array before the 747 stopped. The photos of the scene show the undercarriage is non-existent. A huge crack in the fuselage behind the Queens wings can be seen. It's been widely reported that weather could be a factor but not confirmed. It's thought to have been raining at the time and there were a number of fog banks at the time of the arrival.

The incident occurred on Halifax's shorter runway.

The Canadian airport has 2 runways , this incident affected the days' operations massively as it saw a number of cancellations and delays due to a huge cordon being in place. However air operations were allowed to restart on the larger of the 2 runways.

The Travel Safety Board are now investigating the incident and talking to the air traffic controllers and considering everything including weather and maintenance history. However the airport confirmed the live seafood was later flown to its destination in China by Gateway Aviation.
